UPDATED – Jan 18, 2016!
In the City of Knox lies the leafy bogan suburb of Boronia (VIC), which offers a number of fairly decent op-shops and stores for second hand hunters, with most being conveniently located within walking distance of Boronia train station.
Before I begin a rundown of the shops I should note that the MS Society op-shop in Boronia is now closed. It’s still listed on a number of eastern suburbs op-shop lists but I assure you it’s no longer there. If you go to 34 Dorset Square today all you’ll find is a florist!

As far as Salvo stores go this one is a pretty good! In addition to a big range of clothes is a very decent book collection which for me is the highlight of this store. The cookbook collection in particular is quite large. The clothes are great as well however this store knows the value of different labels so some items, including shoes, are pricier than others – for example I saw a leather jacket for $44. There’s a good jeans range as well but I do question whether pricing a well used top at $7.99 is good value. Although amongst the clothing are some prices that raised my eyebrows, overall things are reasonably priced and I’ve become a solid return visitor to this store.
Aussie Veterans Op Shop
5 Erica Ave, Boronia VIC [ visit website ]
With more and more of the big name charities improving the presentation of their stores, it’s nice to visit an op-shop that.. well.. still looks like an old fashioned op shop! (but without the smell!). The clothing (which is crammed into the racks) is priced at a low old-fashioned op-shop prices too! I saw a lovely ladies vintage coat there the other day for just $4! Despite the big mix of things I rarely seem to buy anything here but that might be because I’ve never had the time to have a good search. Although the shop is tucked down a side street away from the main shopping areas in Boronia, whenever I visit this place it is always buzzing with staff and customers. You get the sense that there is a real community attached to this shop so you can certainly feel good about spending a few dollars there.

Located on a small second floor landing within the fabulous Mish Mash Cafe is a modest selection of second hand clothing, shoes and jewellery that are reasonably priced (nothing over $20). This is a fun range of items to rummage through! If you are spending some time op-shopping in Boronia Mish Mash is THE place to get a decent coffee, their cakes are to die for too!
Save a Dollar Recycles
Shop 7A / 163 Boronia Road, Boronia VIC
A relatively new kid on the block, Save a Dollar is a recycled clothing store with a small amount of jewellery and second hand goods as well. Although it’s a commercial enterprise the clothing is priced similarly if not better to what you’d expect in an op-shop. I generally find one or two pieces when I go in. Save a dollar tends to have more new clothing (seconds/excess stock) than your average op-shop so the items here tend to be more recent than retro but for value they can’t be beat! Check out their promotions before you visit for special discount deals.
