Recently I was invited by Vinnies Victoria to take part in a $20 Dollar Challenge – to assemble a head to toe outfit with items from Vinnies stores for just $20 or less. Needless to say the challenge was accepted! I wear completely thrifted outfits every day. This is not just a challenge, it’s a way of life! By shopping at places like Vinnies instead of the mall, your dollars can not only buy you some quality preloved clothes at a bargain price but help those in need as well. Here are the items I chose:
Table Eight Dress $8.00 (Ringwood Vinnies)
Shoo Biz Shoes $4.00 (Bayswater Vinnies)
Large Sheer Purple Scarf $3.00 (Ringwood Vinnies)
Beaded Necklace $3.00 (Bayswater Vinnies)
Chunky Bracelet $2.00 (Bayswater Vinnies)
I started out by selecting one key item to work around. I couldn’t go past a classic black dress by Table Eight and when I found this beautiful purple scarf I knew I was in business. I have to confess that it was a bit of an effort to find some suitable shoes so these were a compromise. But not for lack of choice. There were plenty of lovely shoes in my size but unfortunately I have awkward feet with high arches so the range of shoes I can wear is quite limited. In order to honestly demonstrate the proof of concept (a head- to-toe outfit from Vinnies for $20 or less) I felt it important to choose shoes I could actually wear and walk in. In the end Bayswater Vinnies delivered shoe success, woohoo! Celebratory change room selfie:
With the basics taken care of I had $5 dollars left for some jewellery. After those were purchased I ended up with items that could create a few different looks, rather than just one. Hooray for long scarves! So here is my $20 outfit with the scarf worn a few different ways. The possibilities are endless…
I hope I didn’t blind you with my neon white legs! I’d apologise for the crappy photos but the poor quality is conveniently disguising the fact that I hadn’t shaved my legs (hello ladies). And just to prove that I’m not actually headless, here I am a few days later about to head out with my new preloved Vinnies outfit on.
Sometimes people tell me that they can only find the odd item from opshops and could never find a full outfit. Have they ever really tried, I wonder? It’s worth giving it a fair go! If I can do it, I’m sure they can too. My outfit is not going to set the catwalk on fire but it doesn’t need too. Not bad for $20 bucks!
What items would you have chosen? Will you give the $20 dollar challenge a go?
